Every winter we bring our stash of face oils out to play. Though some shiver at the thought of applying oil straight to their face—like those with oily or acne-prone skin—the practice of applying a thin coat of oil as the last step in your routine will likely give you all the glowy hydration you hope for, without any of the side effects you’re imagining.
Jojoba oil, almond, prickly pear, grapeseed, and the like have all found their way into the spotlight of the facial oil resurgence. However, our new favorite comes straight from the mind of Alicia Keys’ Keys Soulcare, with their freshly released Deeply Replenishing Squalane Facial Oil ($35), available exclusively on Amazon.
Ahead, everything you need to know about the latest facial oil to hit the market, plus how to use it.
The Inspiration
Inside of Keys Soulcare's signature amethyst glass bottle lies their new healing, replenishing facial oil that's already making some noise online.
The new lightweight oil was dreamed up by Alicia Keys and her team to "create the space to honor ourselves." The singer says that the oil is meant to do more than just hydrate, but help form a " connection between skin and soul" so "we can unlock a whole new side of ourselves and celebrate the strength and beauty that is already inside of us."
Keys Soulcare’s President, Kory Marchisotto, agreed, adding that this oil is the latest in their offering to help everyone celebrate their “individuality, spirituality, and loving your whole self.”
The Formula
The new Deeply Replenishing Squalane Facial Oil claims to have a lightweight, non-comedogenic feeling that works immediately and over time to hydrate even the driest of skin with its signature blend of oils.
The first and most prominent of the oils is the blend of squalane. Squalane is a world-class hydrator that can help soothe anything from irritation caused by retinoids to inflamed skin and weak skin barriers. The plant-based oil works for everyone, even those with oily skin since it helps control oil production while hydrating.
Secondly, the brand added prickly pear seed oil to the mix to up the hydration. The cactus-derived oil is sky-high in vitamin E and can help soothe and hydrate irritated skin.
Thes last ingredient is pomegranate oil. Pomegranates are a well-known source of antioxidants that, when applied to the skin, not only provide all the benefits of antioxidants, but also helps firm the skin and protect against free radical damage. Not to mention, for those with acne-prone skin, it can help heal scarring and prevent breakouts.
There are a few ways you can use this ultra-hydrating blend in your routine. First, and perhaps the easiest way, is to put a few drops on your fingertips, then pat a thin later onto your skin. However, if you're not a fan of how oil feels directly on your skin; apply a few drops into your moisturizer, mix it together on your hand, and apply it as is. Regardless of the method, the brand recommends using it at least nightly, though you can also use it twice a day. Regardless of when you apply, Keys says to always use it with the affirmation "You are good to yourself."
